The University of Lapland, located in the city of Rovaniemi on the Arctic Circle, is an international university of science and art. It is the most northern university in Finland and the European Union. It was established in 1979 and currently has 4,800 students and a staff of 650 in five faculties.
1. Profile
The University of Lapland is committed to promoting sustainable development, well-being and equality at the local, regional and international levels through research, artistic activity and teaching. Our aim is to become an international top expert on Arctic and Northern issues and on tourism.
2. Research
The University of Lapland emphasizes multidisciplinary northern and Arctic research focusing on the environment, people, and livelihoods of the northern regions and the Arctic. Especially the university’s Arctic Centre is engaged in international high-level multidisciplinary research on the quick changes taking place in the regions’ physical, social, and economic environment.
The multidisciplinary tourism research focuses on leisure time and on the service and experience industry as well as the cultural and environmental dimensions of tourism.
Research on design, media, and art promotes northern content production and design in cooperation with the public sector and business life. Besides these special fields, the research is strong in the classical fields of law, pedagogy and social sciences, accompanied with the special interests in media pedagogy, in legal linguistics and legal informatics, and in social welfare and politics.
3. Academic education and international activities
Education at the University of Lapland is based on the university’s research. We offer bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s Degree Programmes within 21 major disciplines.
The different units of the university provide numerous English-language degree and non-degree programmes. Among others, you can focus on northern and Arctic issues, Russian studies, intercultural communication, media analysis, cultural industries, women’s studies, global education, community studies, art, and environmental studies.
